Apple announces the M4 Pro and M4 Max featuring up to 16 CPU cores and 40 GPU cores
Publish date: November 1, 2024, by: HussainIn its recent "week of Mac," Apple unveiled the eagerly awaited MacBook Pro series, now equipped with the new M4 processor family. These updated laptops retain the familiar 14-inch and 16-inch sizes and are available in three different chip options: the standard M4, the previously introduced M4 Pro (initially showcased in the Mac mini), and the high-performance M4 Max, tailored for users requiring enhanced processing capabilities.
The display specifications are of a high standard, as both models incorporate Liquid Retina XDR technology. The 14-inch version offers a resolution of 3,024 x 1,964, whereas the larger 16-inch model features an enhanced resolution of 3,456 x 2,234 pixels. Both displays support a 120Hz refresh rate, referred to as "ProMotion" by Apple. Additionally, they include True Tone functionality and full coverage of the P3 color gamut.
The 14-inch model now includes an extra Thunderbolt 4 USB-C port, increasing the total to three. The overall port arrangement remains consistent, featuring a MagSafe charging port, dual Thunderbolt ports (upgraded to Thunderbolt 5 in M4 Pro and Max versions), and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the left side. The right side is equipped with an HDMI port, a third Thunderbolt connection, and an SDXC card reader. It also supports advanced wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
Power management differs among the models, with the 14-inch versions utilizing 72.4Wh batteries and either 70W adapters for the M4 or 96W for the M4 Pro/Max. The larger 16-inch model boasts a 100Wh battery paired with a 140W USB-C power adapter. Apple claims that the base M4 model can provide up to 24 hours of usage, while the high-performance 16-inch M4 Max configuration offers up to 18 hours. Pricing starts at $1,599 for the base 14-inch MacBook Pro, with the M4 Pro model priced at an additional $400, and the M4 Max model at $3,199. The base 16-inch model is available for $2,499, while the M4 Max edition is priced at $3,499.
